Who is insured?

  • the registered student who signs up for the policy
  • the partner and/or children of the registered student, if they are domiciled with him at the same address in Belgium

Coverage

What does this insurance cover?
What does this insurance not cover?
Non-contractual lability

The BA private life insurance (civil liability private life), also referred to as "family insurance", compensates for extra-contractual damage that you unintentionally cause to someone else (a third party) during your private life.

Damage caused by your pets is also covered.

Some examples:

  • You fall with your bicycle and cause an accident in which someone else suffers a physical injury.
  • You accidentally drop your neighbor's laptop on the floor, damaging this laptop.
  • Your dog bites the leg of a passer-by during a walk. The insurance covers the damage suffered (medical costs, clothing damage, etc.) of this person.

Compensation is made for the physical, material and immaterial damage of the third party.

Legal assistance guarantee

You can invoke this guarantee if you suffer damage during your private life due to the fault of someone else (a third party).
With this guarantee you can, if necessary, rely on legal assistance in order to recover the damage suffered.

An example:

  • As a pedestrian, you are hit by a car and you have physical injuries: the legal expenses insurer defends your rights against the person who caused the accident and will try to recover your damage.
Contractual liability

The private liability insurance does not cover damage related to a contractual agreement.

Some examples:

  • A fire starts in the student room that you rent, causing damage to the building. In this case you have a rental agreement with the owner. You cannot invoke the BA private life insurance, but you must, if possible, file a declaration with your fire insurance in accordance with the provisions in the rental agreement.
  • You buy a bicycle and discover a defect. You raise this with the seller of the bicycle, but you do not reach an agreement. You cannot invoke the BA private life insurance because a 'purchase' is a contractual agreement.
Damage you cause with a motor vehicle

An example:

  • You cause an accident with your car and must compensate the other party for the damage. You cannot invoke the BA private life insurance, since damage caused as a driver of a motor vehicle (car, moped, etc.) is covered by another insurance policy, which is required by law. You must declare these claims to the third-party liability insurance linked to the vehicle.
Own damage

An example:

  • You have a new smartphone and accidentally drop it, causing irreparable damage to the device. The BA private life insurance does not intervene because this concerns damage that you have caused to your own belongings.
Why join the private liability policy?
  • The private liability policy offers sound financial protection for a very limited premium if you accidentally cause damage to third parties or if you suffer damage yourself.
  • Most Belgian students are insured by their parents' family insurance, as long as they live with their parents, even if they stay in a flat. If you are no longer domiciled with your parents or if your parents are not insured, then you have every interest in joining this collective insurance policy of KU Leuven.
  • Although a private liability policy is common in Belgium, international students usually do not have such a policy. These students certainly benefit from joining.

Exemption

From what amount of damage can you file a report?

In the event of an insured claim with only material damage, an intervention threshold of 200 euros applies:

  • If the damage amounts to more than 200 euros, the compensation will be paid in full to the claimant by the insurer. In such a case, you do not have to take anything for your own account.
  • If the amount of damage does not exceed the sum of 200 euros, no declaration can be made and you must compensate the damage yourself.

This intervention threshold does not apply to a claim with only physical or both material and physical damage.

Connection

The academic government determines who is required to join or who can optionally join the BA private life policy.

Are you a non-EEA student?
  • If you are temporarily staying in Belgium as a non-EEA student, you are obliged to be affiliated with the policy when you register as a student at KU Leuven.
  • The connection is automatic and you do not have to take any steps yourself.
Are you a Belgian student or an EEA student?
  • As a Belgian student or EEA student, you can optionally join the policy when you (re)register at KU Leuven. The connection is not automatic. At the time of (re)enrolment as a student, via the electronic module, you must indicate yourself that you wish to join the BA private life policy.
  • You can only join at the time of (re)registration. You can only join in the course of the academic year in exceptional circumstances.
  • You can contact the Insurance Office for this.
Premium

The premium is an annual premium. As a student, you are insured for a full academic year upon enrollment. When you join the policy for the first time, the premium is EUR 10. The premium is EUR 5 for the following academic years.

In case of interruption of your studies at KU Leuven for more than one academic year, the premium will again be EUR 10 at the next reconnection.

The premium will be charged on the invoice of your tuition fees. You must pay the invoice on time to be able to enjoy the insurance coverage.

Request an insurance certificate

You can request a private liability insurance certificate from the Insurance Office.

Period of validity of insurance cover

The private liability policy only applies to students who are registered at KU Leuven. When you stop your studies, you are no longer a registered student and the insurance cover will expire. If you wish to be insured under liability/legal assistance from the date of termination of your studies, you will have to take out family insurance on the private market.
