Youreca Professional Skills Training 2023-2024

Workshops

Writing for a general audience (2 two-hour sessions)

This course is restricted to phd-researchers from all KU Leuven doctoral schools.

  • Researchers are experts in their field, and in communicating about their work they tend to use highly specialized language. However, being able to communicate their research to a general audience is an increasingly important skill, regardless of their future career. The training sessions aim to advise you on how to write about a scientific subject in an interesting and accessible way.
  • In order to appeal to a wide audience, appropriate language, style and structure are essential. In session one, authentic examples will be analysed and language and style issues will be discussed using your own texts. Session two focuses on structuring principles and touches upon principles of writing scientific journalism.
  • You are expected to write a one-page text presenting your research to a general audience. Please bring a printed version of this text to the first session.
  • The course book for the workshop can be purchased at the ILT bookshop for around 10-15 euro.

Next sessions:

  • WGA E: Wednesday 15 May 13:00-15:00 & Wednesday 22 May 13:00-15:00 (ILT 01.124)
  • WGA F: Wednesday 15 May 16:00-18:00 & Wednesday 22 May 16:00-18:00 (ILT 01.124)
